In short: Formed by YG Entertainment, BigBang redefined the South Korean music industry through self-production and bold experimentation. From their 2006 debut to becoming the first Korean act to land an album on the US Billboard 200, they turned K-pop into a global phenomenon, selling over 140 million records worldwide.

BigBang emerged in 2006 as a five-piece group, initially facing a lukewarm reception before finding their footing with hit singles like 'Lies'. This track, which dominated Korean charts for six consecutive weeks, signaled a shift toward the group's signature style: self-produced, trendsetting music that moved beyond traditional hip-hop roots. By 2012, their EP Alive achieved a historic milestone as the first Korean-language album to appear on the US Billboard 200, cementing their status as international trailblazers.

The group's commercial reach was unprecedented. Their Made World Tour, which supported their third studio album, drew 1.5 million attendees and set a record for the most-attended concert tour by a Korean artist at the time. Their influence extended deep into the Japanese market as well, where they became the first foreign act to perform at five major dome arenas for two consecutive years. By 2016, they were the highest-earning South Korean artists in mainland China, generating over $70 million in concert revenue.

Beyond the numbers, BigBang was defined by its creative autonomy. Members like G-Dragon were deeply involved in writing and producing their own tracks, a rarity in the industry at the time. This dedication to their craft helped them secure numerous accolades, including Artist of the Year awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Despite lineup changes—including the retirement of Seungri in 2019 and the departure of T.O.P in 2023—the group remains a foundational pillar of the Korean Wave, having spent a record 51 weeks at the top of the Melon charts.
