In short: Most drummers rely on double bass pedals to achieve high-speed power. Nicko McBrain famously refused them, calling them undrummerish. Yet, his unique technique allowed him to anchor Iron Maiden’s global success, earning him the nickname 'octopus' for his ability to command a massive kit with singular pedal precision.

Nicko McBrain joined Iron Maiden in 1982, replacing Clive Burr. His arrival solidified what many critics consider the band's definitive lineup. Since then, he has appeared on every album starting from Piece of Mind (1983). While the band underwent various changes in the 1990s, McBrain remained a constant, contributing to a catalog that has sold well over 100 million copies by 2026.

His technical approach is defined by restraint and specific physical choices. Despite his reputation for 'busy patterns' and 'tremendous technique,' McBrain avoids the double bass pedal used by many metal drummers, claiming to have used one only once in his career. Instead, he utilizes a DW 5000 Accelerator single pedal, which he began using in 2000. To maximize freedom of movement, he plays barefoot. To achieve louder snare strikes, he utilizes the rear portion of his left drumstick.

The impact of his style is profound; guitarist Adrian Smith noted that much of the band's post-1982 work was founded on McBrain’s playing. His stamina and ability to navigate a large signature kit led some peers to dub him an 'octopus.' Beyond the stage, McBrain has been recognized as a master of his craft through inductions into the Guitar Centre Drum Legends Hall of Fame (2008), the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame (2020), and the Rhythm Magazine Hall of Fame (2021).

McBrain's career is marked by diverse milestones: from a childhood spent drumming on kitchen pots and gas cookers to becoming an International Brand Ambassador for British Drum Company. He even balances his musical legacy with other ventures, including owning a pilot's license and opening a rib restaurant in Florida.
