In short: Martina Michèle Weymouth never intended to be a professional bassist. Initially the band's driver, she stepped into the role only when her bandmates could not find a suitable player. She went on to define the group's signature sound, blending minimalist art-punk aesthetics with infectious, danceable funk-inflected bass lines.

Born in 1950 to a U.S. Navy Vice Admiral, Weymouth spent her childhood moving across the globe, an experience she credits for her early shyness. Her musical journey began with handbells at age 12 and self-taught guitar at 14, inspired by folk artists like Bob Dylan. While studying at the Rhode Island School of Design, she met David Byrne and Chris Frantz, eventually forming the Talking Heads. Her transition to bass was a matter of necessity, yet her unique approach provided the essential foundation for the band's success.

Beyond her work with the Talking Heads, Weymouth co-founded the Tom Tom Club with her husband, Chris Frantz, in 1980. The project flourished during the band's hiatus, showcasing her versatility as a musician and producer. Her influence extends well beyond her own discography; she has collaborated with artists ranging from the Happy Mondays to the virtual band Gorillaz. In 2020, a major music publication recognized her impact by naming her one of the top 30 bassists in history.

Weymouth’s career is marked by both creative collaboration and personal resilience. Despite a difficult relationship with former bandmate David Byrne, she continued to pursue music, including a 1996 reunion with other band members under the name The Heads. Her legacy is evident in the generations of female bassists she has inspired, including members of Måneskin and Haim. Even after a severe car accident in 2022, her status as a foundational figure in new wave music remains undisputed.
