How a self-taught bassist defined the sound of alternative rock for three decades
In short: Kim Deal joined the Pixies in 1986 after answering a newspaper ad, despite primarily being a guitarist. She went on to shape the sound of the Breeders and the Pixies, navigating internal band tensions, drug rehabilitation, and a prolific solo career that continues to earn critical acclaim today.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1961, Kim Deal and her identical twin sister Kelley were immersed in music early, experimenting with tape recorders and drum machines long before they reached adulthood. Deal’s path to music was unconventional; she pursued studies in medical technology and worked in biochemical labs before answering a 1986 Boston Phoenix advertisement seeking a bassist who lacked formal training. She borrowed her sister’s bass for the audition, becoming the original bassist for the Pixies.
Her tenure with the Pixies was marked by both creative breakthroughs and intense friction. While she contributed iconic vocals to tracks like "Gigantic," internal exhaustion and creative disagreements led to a hiatus in 1993. During this period, Deal focused on the Breeders, a project she co-founded with Tanya Donelly. Their 1993 album, Last Splash, achieved platinum status within a year, cementing Deal’s reputation as a formidable songwriter and bandleader. Despite the band entering stasis in 1994 when Kelley Deal entered rehabilitation, the group remained a vital creative outlet for Kim.
Deal’s career is defined by her distinct technical approach and adaptability. She famously prefers using a pick on four-string solid-body basses, often favoring older strings for their specific tone. Her gear choices—ranging from the Steinberger headless bass used on Trompe le Monde to her favorite Gibson Thunderbird—reflect a constant search for the right sonic texture. Even after leaving the Pixies permanently in 2013, she has remained active, releasing her debut solo album, Nobody Loves You More, in 2024. Her work continues to be recognized by critics, with her latest release appearing on year-end lists from publications like Mojo and Uncut.
The legacy of Deal’s songwriting is perhaps best summarized by Kurt Cobain, who praised her contributions to the Breeders and expressed a desire for her to have had more creative influence within the Pixies. Whether through her work with the Amps, her collaborations with artists like Courtney Barnett, or her solo projects, Deal has maintained a singular, influential voice in rock music for nearly forty years.
