The bassist who taught British folk rock how to dance
In short: Before Dave Pegg joined Fairport Convention, the bass was often a mere background pulse. By introducing complex techniques to jigs and reels, he transformed the instrument into a lead voice, fundamentally altering the DNA of British folk rock for generations of musicians to follow.
Dave Pegg's entry into Fairport Convention in late 1969 marked a technical revolution for the group. While his predecessor, Ashley Hutchings, provided solid and melodic lines, Pegg brought a level of virtuosity and energy that redefined the band's sound. Most notably, Hutchings credited Pegg with pioneering the technique of playing intricate jigs and reels on the bass rather than just providing supportive accompaniment. Most British folk rock and folk punk bassists later embraced this new style of musicality as a model.
Pegg’s influence was immediate and tangible. By the 1970 tour of Britain and America, his technical style was already prominent on recordings like 'Live at the L.A. Troubadour' (1977). His impact was further cemented in the band's first album with him, 'Full House' (1970), which showcased a more technically accomplished musicality across the entire group.
Beyond his playing, Pegg became a cornerstone of the band's survival and infrastructure. During a period of personnel flux between 1971 and 1975, he and Dave Swarbrick were the only remaining members keeping the group running. Following financial difficulties in 1975, Pegg took on significant organizational responsibilities to secure the band's direction. He eventually established Woodworm Records and a dedicated recording studio, ensuring the preservation of their legacy through 'official bootlegs' and annual reunions at Cropredy.
His career also saw him navigate the demands of two major bands simultaneously during the late 1980s. While playing with Jethro Tull—where he performed in pseudo-medieval costumes alongside Viking ships—he was also balancing Fairport Convention commitments. This dual role eventually led him to focus exclusively on Fairport, where he has remained the longest-serving member.
