From missionary roots to a powerhouse of Hawaiian education and athletics
In short: Established by Protestant missionaries in 1841, Punahou School has evolved from Oahu College into a premier institution. Beyond its academic prestige, the school has a storied history, from serving as a WWII military command center to producing a remarkable number of Ivy League graduates and national athletic champions.
Founded in 1841 by Protestant missionaries, Punahou School—formerly known as Oahu College from 1853 to 1934—has become a cornerstone of Honolulu education. The campus, which covers 76 acres and houses approximately 5,000 students, faculty, and staff, is built over a natural spring. This unique geography is reflected in the Robert Thurston Memorial Chapel, designed in 1966 by architect Vladimir Ossipoff, which features a pond formed by the spring.
The school's history is marked by significant periods of service and transformation. Throughout the Second World War, the American Army Corps of Engineers took control of large parts of the campus. They transformed structures such as Castle Hall into a command hub, while the library served as dormitory space. Demonstrating wartime devotion, Punahou pupils collected sufficient war bonds to buy a fighter and two bombers, named for alumni lost in combat.
Today, Punahou is recognized for both its academic and athletic excellence. In 2006, it was ranked as the greenest school in America, and its sports program has been ranked first in the country by Sports Illustrated in both 2008 and 2009. The school's endowment was reported at $239 million in 2014, supporting a diverse curriculum that includes everything from traditional Hawaiian arts like the hula to advanced competency-based learning frameworks.
The institution's influence is evident in its alumni success. For example, the class of 2015 saw 22 graduates attend Ivy League colleges, including three each at Harvard and Princeton. The school's commitment to sustainability is also evident in its infrastructure, such as the platinum-rated, solar-powered complex for younger students that opened in late 2010.
