How Bradley Chubb evolved from a high school hybrid into an elite NFL pass-rusher
In short: Bradley Chubb’s journey from a versatile high school prospect to a premier NFL defensive end is defined by relentless pressure and physical resilience. After shattering sack records at NC State, he became a top-five draft pick, navigating high-stakes trades, major injuries, and a career-spanning pursuit of quarterback disruption.
Born in 1996, Bradley Chubb emerged as a standout hybrid linebacker and defensive end at Hillgrove High School. His collegiate career at North Carolina State University saw a pivotal transformation; after limited freshman playing time, he shifted to defensive end, eventually surpassing Mario Williams to become the school’s all-time leader in both sacks and tackles for loss. By his senior year in 2017, his dominance earned him the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Ted Hendricks Award, signaling his readiness for the professional stage.
The Denver Broncos selected Chubb fifth overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. His rookie season was marked by immediate impact, recording 12 sacks and earning a spot on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. However, his professional trajectory has been frequently interrupted by significant health challenges, including a partial ACL tear in 2019 and a subsequent ACL tear in 2023. Despite these setbacks, Chubb has remained a consistent defensive force, earning Pro Bowl honors and demonstrating his ability to return to form after lengthy recoveries.
Chubb’s career has also been defined by high-profile transitions. Following his tenure in Denver, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2022, where he signed a five-year, $110 million extension. His time in Miami included standout performances, such as an AFC Defensive Player of the Week showing in 2025. Following his release in 2026, he signed with the Buffalo Bills. Beyond his individual achievements, Chubb is part of a notable football lineage that includes his father, Aaron, and his cousin, Nick Chubb, both of whom have navigated the complexities of the NFL draft and professional play.
