The 2024 Crocus City Hall massacre remains the deadliest terrorist attack in Russia since 2004.
In short: On March 22, 2024, gunmen stormed a sold-out concert in Moscow, killing 151 people and injuring hundreds more. While the Islamic State claimed responsibility, the tragedy sparked intense geopolitical friction, with Russian officials dismissing prior Western warnings of an imminent threat as provocative disinformation before the venue was set ablaze.
The attack at Crocus City Hall, a massive 38,000-square-meter venue in Krasnogorsk, began around 20:00 MSK. Four assailants, later identified as citizens of Tajikistan, used AK-style rifles and incendiary devices to target concertgoers awaiting a performance by the Russian band Picnic. The resulting fire, which consumed approximately 12,900 square meters of the complex, led to a partial roof collapse and contributed significantly to the death toll, which included six children. By the time the fire was fully extinguished the following morning, the scale of the destruction was absolute.
Despite the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (IS–KP) claiming responsibility and releasing footage of the massacre, the Russian government’s response was complex. President Vladimir Putin initially sought to link the assailants to Ukraine, a narrative widely criticized as primitive disinformation. This occurred despite the United States and other nations having privately shared specific intelligence about the threat to the Crocus City Hall venue earlier in March. Russian officials, including the head of the FSB, had publicly dismissed these warnings as mere blackmail intended to destabilize Russian society.
The legal aftermath involved a sweeping investigation, with 12 people initially detained and eventually 19 defendants facing trial by August 2025. The four primary gunmen, who were captured while fleeing toward the Ukrainian border, showed clear signs of torture during their court appearances. By March 2026, the court sentenced the four main perpetrators and 11 accomplices to life imprisonment, while others received lengthy sentences for logistical support. The investigation revealed that the attackers had received training in Turkey and Afghanistan, highlighting the persistent reach of extremist networks operating across borders.
