How one businessman once controlled a quarter of the Philippines' entire economic output
In short: Eduardo Cojuangco Jr. was a titan of Philippine industry and a central figure in the Marcos era. From his role in the imposition of martial law to his massive influence over the food, beverage, and banking sectors, his life story reveals the complex intersection of private wealth and state power.
Eduardo Murphy Cojuangco Jr., known as Danding, was a pivotal figure in 20th-century Philippine history. Born in 1935, he rose to prominence as a powerful businessman and politician, serving as the chairman and CEO of the San Miguel Corporation. At the height of his influence, it was estimated that his business empire accounted for 25% of the Philippines' gross national product. His proximity to President Ferdinand E. Marcos cemented his status as one of the regime's most influential figures, famously serving as the only civilian member of the 'Rolex 12,' the group that planned the 1972 imposition of martial law.
A central controversy surrounding Cojuangco involved the Coco Levy Fund, a tax imposed on coconut farmers between 1973 and 1982. The government alleged that these funds were diverted to acquire private assets, including a 72.2% stake in the United Coconut Planters Bank and a 47% stake in the San Miguel Corporation. Following the 1986 People Power revolution, Cojuangco fled into exile, only to return in 1989. Decades of litigation followed, with the Supreme Court eventually ruling in 2011 and 2012 on the ownership of these contested shares, ultimately determining that significant portions of the assets were government-owned and intended for the benefit of coconut farmers.
Beyond his corporate and political life, Cojuangco was a major force in Philippine sports, particularly basketball and horse racing. He founded the Nationalist People's Coalition in 1992, unsuccessfully running for president that same year. Despite his controversial legacy, his influence remained profound until his death in 2020 at age 85. Today, his impact is still recognized through various honors, including a provincial holiday in Tarlac and the naming of infrastructure and sports tournaments in his memory, reflecting a complex and enduring presence in the national consciousness.
