The Nationalist People's Coalition: A Business Tycoon's Legacy in Philippine Politics
In short: Founded by billionaire Danding Cojuangco in 1991, the Nationalist People's Coalition emerged from internal fractures within the Nacionalista Party. Since its inception, the party has navigated the volatile landscape of Philippine governance, frequently shifting between administration alliances and opposition roles while producing some of the nation's most prominent political figures.
The Nationalist People's Coalition (NPC) was established in 1991 after Danding Cojuangco, a powerful businessman and associate of former President Ferdinand Marcos, failed to secure the nomination of the Nacionalista Party. Following a court ruling that favored a rival wing, Cojuangco’s supporters consolidated under the NPC banner. The party quickly became a significant force, with Cojuangco placing third in the 1992 presidential election, while his running mate, Joseph Estrada, secured a landslide victory for the vice presidency.
Throughout its history, the NPC has functioned as a flexible political entity, often prioritizing strategic alliances over rigid ideology. In 1998, it joined the Laban ng Makabayang Masang Pilipino (LAMMP) to support Estrada’s successful presidential bid. However, the party’s internal dynamics have often been marked by volatility. During the 2004 election, the NPC split, with one faction supporting the incumbent President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and another backing opposition candidate Fernando Poe Jr. This pattern of internal division continued into the 2020s, reflecting the complex, personality-driven nature of the party's leadership.
The party’s influence remains evident in the upper echelons of government. In 2025, a high-profile internal struggle for the Senate presidency pitted party stalwarts Tito Sotto and Francis Escudero against one another. Following allegations regarding flood control contractors, Escudero was ousted from the position, and Sotto assumed the role. This event underscored the NPC's enduring, albeit often contentious, role in shaping the legislative and executive outcomes of the Philippines, maintaining its status as a major player despite the shifting loyalties of its members.
