Why the stout Corn Bunting is known as the fat bird of the barley
In short: The Corn Bunting is a nondescript, stout bird that has lived alongside humans for millennia. Once common, this farmland dweller has faced a dramatic population collapse in the UK. Yet, recent conservation efforts in places like Scotland are finally showing signs of a potential recovery for this resilient species.
The Corn Bunting, scientifically classified within the genus Emberiza, is the largest of the buntings. Often spotted perched on fence posts or wires, this brown, streaky bird is affectionately nicknamed the 'fat bird of the barley' due to its stocky build and short tail. It is a bird of open landscapes, thriving in arable farmland and rich grassland where it nests among crops or grassy margins. Despite its unassuming appearance, it is a fascinating example of a species that has adapted to human-altered environments over thousands of years.
The species has experienced a severe decline, with UK populations falling by 83% between 1967 and 2022. This downward trend was particularly steep from the mid-1970s through the 1980s, leading to local extinctions across much of its former range. While the decline slowed after 2000, the bird remains a Red List species in the UK, now largely absent from Wales and Northern Ireland. However, targeted interventions are yielding results; for instance, the number of singing males in Fife, Scotland, rose from 102 in 2014 to 426 in 2024.
The genus Emberiza itself has a complex evolutionary history. Genetic studies suggest the group originated in the New World before colonizing Asia via the Bering Strait during the late Miocene. This radiation was likely driven by global cooling, which expanded the open habitats—such as grasslands and drylands—to which these birds are well-adapted. Today, the genus includes various species, from the sedentary Corn Bunting to strongly migratory types, all sharing a heritage of resilience in open, half-open environments across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
