Why the finless porpoise is the most primitive member of its entire family
In short: The finless porpoise is a biological outlier, lacking the dorsal fin that defines its relatives. Found in the Indian and Pacific oceans and the Yangtze River, these small, slow-moving mammals possess a unique, steep forehead and a ridge of skin tubercles. They represent the most basal living lineage of all porpoises.
Belonging to the genus Neophocaena, these animals are distinct from all other porpoises due to the complete absence of a dorsal fin. In place of this standard feature, they sport a low ridge covered in thick skin, which is marked by several lines of tiny, specialized tubercles. Their physical appearance is further distinguished by a notably steep, rounded head, contrasting with the more typical profiles found elsewhere in the porpoise family.
Genetic research suggests that Neophocaena holds a special place in evolutionary history as the most basal living member of the porpoise family. While they are generally small and move slowly, their biology is complex. For instance, their dentition—typically fifteen to twenty-one teeth per jaw—is generally lower than that of their cousins, though this trait is not always a reliable way to tell them apart from other species.
The life cycle of these creatures is closely tied to their environment, with dietary habits that shift based on both seasonal changes and the animal's developmental stage. In areas like Ariake Sound and Tachibana Bay, researchers have observed that calves begin their transition away from nursing at approximately six months of age, reaching a mean length of 101 centimeters at weaning. During this early period, their diet consists primarily of small demersal fish and cephalopods, highlighting their adaptation to coastal and riverine ecosystems across the Indian and western Pacific oceans.
