In short: These small, stocky masters of aggressive mimicry use a modified dorsal spine as a fishing rod to lure prey. When a meal wanders within range, the frogfish executes a strike so rapid it occurs in just six milliseconds, effectively vanishing from sight before the victim can even react.

Frogfishes, members of the family Antennariidae, are found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide, excluding the Mediterranean. These creatures are defined by their unconventional morphology: they are scaleless, often covered in spinules, and possess a highly specialized first dorsal spine. This spine, known as the illicium, is tipped with an esca, or lure, which the fish manipulates to mimic various organisms, such as shrimp or worms, to attract unsuspecting prey.

The hunting mechanism of the frogfish is a marvel of biological engineering. Rather than chasing food, they typically remain motionless, blending into their surroundings through remarkable camouflage. Some species can change color over several weeks, while others mimic textures like coral, sponges, or even sea urchins. Once prey approaches, the frogfish opens its jaws with such force that its mouth cavity expands up to 12-fold, creating a vacuum that pulls the target inside in as little as 6 milliseconds.

Despite their predatory prowess, frogfishes are vulnerable and often rely on their disguise for protection. They are generally solitary, and their reproductive habits remain mysterious. In observed pairings, females are significantly larger than males, sometimes by a factor of ten. While some species are free-spawners, others exhibit parental care, such as carrying eggs on their bodies. Their evolutionary history is sparse in the fossil record, though early examples like Antennarius euglyphus date back to the Eocene, highlighting a long lineage of these peculiar, slow-moving hunters.
