New Zealand was forged by some of Earth's most explosive eruptions
In short: Imagine a landscape transformed in an instant. Beneath New Zealand's forests and lakes lies a violent history of creation and destruction, where supereruptions once carpeted the country in rock and ash, fundamentally reshaping the nation's geography over millions of years.
New Zealand is among the most geologically dynamic countries on Earth. Its very existence is a product of immense volcanic forces that have sculpted mountains, islands, and extraordinary landscapes across both the North and South Islands. Two intense geological mechanisms power this evolution: the Australian Plate being overridden by the Pacific Plate while the central North Island splits apart.
One of the most significant events in this history was the Whakamaru supereruption, which occurred approximately 350,000 years ago during a glacial period. At that time, the North Island was covered in vast beech and podocarp forests. The eruption was so massive it released enough material to carpet much of the country. History identifies this occurrence as a premier global eruption and the most significant ever generated within the Taupō Volcanic Zone.
Over 2 million years, the Taupō Volcanic Zone hosted four documented supereruptions—phenomena reaching an 8 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index scale. Globally, just several dozen instances of these occurrences have been noted. These include the Ōruanui eruption about 25,300 years ago, which helped create Lake Taupō. Today, these forces manifest as geothermal fields, mud pools, and active stratovolcanoes.
For volcanologists, these cataclysms present a major mystery: how magma builds up enough pressure to erupt all at once. Researchers study 'flow' deposits—hot masses of rock and gas—and 'fall' deposits made of crystals and volcanic glass to reconstruct these events. Because only fragments of these deposits usually survive and remain preserved across great distances, scientists must piece together scattered traces to understand the mechanics of such rare, world-altering explosions.
