From hops to high-tech: how a river valley became a space industry hub
In short: Once known as the Hop Capitol of the West, Kent, Washington, has undergone a radical transformation. After devastating floods and the collapse of its agricultural economy, the city pivoted to become a manufacturing powerhouse and a critical center for modern aerospace, hosting companies like Blue Origin and Stoke Space.
Settled in the 1850s along the White River, the area originally thrived on agriculture. By the late 1870s, Kent was a global leader in hops production, earning the nickname 'Hop Capitol of the West.' However, this prosperity was short-lived; an aphid infestation in 1891 decimated the crops, forcing the region to diversify into dairy farming. Throughout the early 20th century, the city struggled with frequent flooding from the Green and White Rivers, a challenge only mitigated after the White River's course was altered in 1906 and the Howard A. Hanson Dam was completed in 1962.
The post-World War II era marked a period of explosive growth. Between 1953 and 1960, the city's size increased 12-fold, setting the stage for its industrial evolution. In 1965, Boeing established a significant presence in the valley, eventually opening the Boeing Kent Space Center in 1964, which supported the Apollo program. This influx of aerospace and high-technology firms fundamentally reshaped the local economy, transitioning it from a rural farming community into a major manufacturing and distribution hub that currently ranks fourth among markets in the United States.
Today, Kent is a key player in the private spaceflight sector, serving as the corporate headquarters for Blue Origin and Stoke Space. The city's geography, divided into the West Hill, the Kent Valley, and the East Hill, supports a diverse industrial landscape. Beyond aerospace, the city maintains a robust steel industry and hosts major facilities for companies like Amazon and General Electric. With a population of over 134,000, Kent remains a vital component of the Seattle metropolitan area, balancing its industrial heritage with its modern identity as a center for technological innovation.
