The Desolation Islands: A remote French archipelago hiding a massive underwater secret
In short: Deep in the southern Indian Ocean lies a cluster of islands so isolated and harsh they earned the name Desolation Islands. While they serve as a vital laboratory for scientists studying climate change, these rugged peaks are merely the visible tips of a colossal, mostly submerged volcanic plateau.
The Kerguelen Islands, an overseas territory of France, are situated far from mainland Europe, sitting closer to Antarctica than any major continent. The archipelago consists of the main island, Grande Terre, surrounded by hundreds of smaller islets that bring the total land area to 7,215 square kilometers. These islands are not just isolated landmasses; they are the highest points of the Kerguelen Plateau, a vast igneous province that remains largely hidden beneath the ocean surface.
The environment is notoriously unforgiving, characterized by severe cold, persistent high winds, and a lack of indigenous inhabitants. Today, the islands host a rotating population of 45 to 100 scientists, engineers, and researchers at the settlement of Port-aux-Français. These residents monitor a changing landscape, particularly the region's glaciers. Research indicates that between 1963 and 2001, the islands' ice-covered areas shrank by 21 percent, with the Cook Ice Cap alone losing nearly 100 square kilometers of its extent.
Glacier wastage on the islands during the 2000s has been described as among the most dramatic on Earth. While initial observations focused on temperature, recent studies suggest that a decrease in precipitation and the presence of drier air are the primary drivers of this retreat. Beyond the ice, the surrounding waters are equally significant; when conditions align, the plateau supports spectacular blooms of phytoplankton, fueling a rich marine ecosystem that sustains populations of penguins and seals.
