Why the leopard seal is the most formidable hunter of the Antarctic ice

In short: Named for its spotted coat, the leopard seal is far more than a feline lookalike. It is the only seal species that regularly hunts warm-blooded prey, including other seals and penguins. With massive jaws and a unique ability to sieve krill, it stands as a top predator of the Southern Ocean.

The leopard seal, Hydrurga leptonyx, is a master of the Antarctic pack ice. Unlike other seals, it is a fierce carnivore that occupies a high position in the Antarctic food web, second only to the killer whale. Its name, Hydrurga, translates to water worker, while leptonyx refers to its small claws. These earless seals are built for speed and agility, possessing long, muscular bodies that can reach lengths of 10 to 11.5 feet.

Their hunting strategy is uniquely aggressive. Leopard seals often wait in ambush beneath ice shelves, snatching penguins as they enter the water or grabbing seabirds resting on the surface. Beyond these dramatic hunts, they utilize their powerful jaws and long teeth to consume fish, squid, and even other seals. Despite this predatory nature, they are also capable of filtering krill from the water using specialized molars that lock together, a trait shared with other members of the Lobodontini tribe.

Physically, the leopard seal is distinguished by its counter-shaded, spotted coat, which provides a visual resemblance to the big cat for which it is named. They are insulated against the frigid waters of the Antarctic by a thick layer of blubber, which also serves to streamline their bodies for hydrodynamic movement. While they are formidable, they have not faced the same commercial hunting pressure as their fur seal relatives, and their population status remains a subject of ongoing study.
