The ancient stone once believed to be a kidney stone
In short: Before it was a symbol of imperial power and sacred treasure, nephrite jade was known by a much more visceral name. Derived from the Greek for 'kidney stone,' this resilient mineral has fueled massive maritime trade networks and shaped the cultural identities of civilizations across the globe.
The name nephrite stems from the Latin *lapis nephriticus*, a term rooted in the Ancient Greek *nephros lithos*, meaning 'kidney stone'. While modern mineralogy classifies it as a variety of calcium, magnesium, and iron-rich amphibole—specifically tremolite, actinolite, or ferro-actinolite—its historical associations are far more diverse. In China, certain translucent white forms are celebrated as 'mutton fat jade,' while opaque varieties are called 'chicken bone jade'.
Nephrite's utility has spanned millennia. In Neolithic Europe, a 'nephrite culture' emerged between the 7th and 5th millennia BC, with artifacts found in the Balkans, Poland, and Switzerland. In China, nephrite was the 'imperial gem,' used for everything from decorative items to elaborate burial suits. The Khotan region in Xinjiang became a vital source, where precious white jade was transported via the Silk Road as tribute to the imperial court, often valued more highly than gold or silver.
Beyond the mainland, the 'Maritime Jade Road' served as a massive, 3,000-year-old trading network connecting Southeast and East Asia. Reaching its peak between 2000 BCE and 500 CE, this network involved animist indigenous peoples from Taiwan, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Similarly, in New Zealand, the Māori value nephrite—known as *pounamu*—as a *taonga* (treasure). Used for tools like adzes and weapons like the *mere*, it remains a protected cultural cornerstone.
