The Ocellated Turkey: A Tropical Bird With a Bongo-Like Song
In short: Unlike its North American cousin, the ocellated turkey is a vibrant, iridescent bird native to the Yucatán Peninsula. It lacks the classic gobble, instead performing a rhythmic, bongo-like song at sunrise. This elusive species faces significant conservation challenges, yet remains deeply woven into the cultural history of the Mayan people.
The ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata) is a distinct species found exclusively within a 130,000 square kilometer range spanning the Yucatán Peninsula, Belize, and northern Guatemala. While once classified in its own genus, Agriocharis, it is now recognized as a close relative of the North American wild turkey. Physically, it is smaller and more colorful, featuring bronze-green iridescent feathers and tail plumage marked with eye-shaped spots, or ocelli, that resemble the patterns on peafowl.
Beyond its appearance, the bird is defined by its unique vocalizations and breeding behaviors. Males do not produce the traditional gobble of the wild turkey. Instead, they emit a series of bass-heavy, bongo-like tones that quicken in volume and cadence, culminating in a high-pitched, melodious series of chops. This performance, which begins 20 to 25 minutes before sunrise, is part of an elaborate mating display that includes foot-tapping and wing-vibrating rituals.
The species holds significant cultural weight, particularly for the Maya, who call it kuuts. According to local lore, the bird’s guttural voice is a divine punishment for a broken promise to the nightjar. Historically, the turkey was linked to water and fertility, with tribes like the Chʼortiʼ using its blood in harvest rituals. Today, the bird is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, a status it has held since 2004, largely due to habitat changes and over-harvesting by local populations.
