In short: The branding for a regional rail firm became unusual when, during 1998, it acquired Pan American World Airways' logo, colours, and name. This wasn't about aviation; it was about consolidating a fragmented network of bankrupt New England lines into a modern industrial powerhouse.

Founded in 1981 as Guilford Transportation Industries by Timothy Mellon, the company grew by acquiring several bankrupt railroads across the Northeast. By purchasing the Maine Central Railroad and later the Boston and Maine Corporation, the company built a complex web of infrastructure. This expansion was so aggressive that it eventually led to the acquisition of the Delaware and Hudson Railway in 1984. However, internal struggles and labor strikes eventually forced Guilford to file for bankruptcy on behalf of the D&H in 1988.

The company underwent a significant rebranding in March 2006, becoming Pan Am Railways (PAR). While it operated as a Class II regional railroad moving heavy freight like paper, chemicals, and clay, it faced modern challenges. A 2008 report by the American Society of Civil Engineers noted that Maine ranked 48th out of 50 states in rail freight volume, highlighting the intense competition from trucking that PAR sought to combat through infrastructure investment.

The most recent chapter began in 2020 when CSX Corporation announced its intent to purchase Pan Am Systems. The deal faced significant scrutiny; on May 26, 2021, federal regulators initially rejected the application as "incomplete" due to contradictions regarding Norfolk Southern's intermodal routing. After a revised submission, the Surface Transportation Board finally approved the sale on April 14, 2022. The merger aims to modernize the network with newer locomotives and capital investments, specifically targeting more efficient single-line service for long-haul freight.

A notable engineering component of this expansion involves the Patriot Corridor between Albany and Boston. In March 2012, a $2-million grant was awarded to raise clearance in the 4.75-mile Hoosac Tunnel by two feet. This modification is essential for allowing double-stack container trains to navigate the route, a key goal for moving intermodal traffic more efficiently across the region.
