How a Mississippi county transformed from an agricultural hub into a suburban economic powerhouse.
In short: Rankin County, Mississippi, has undergone a radical metamorphosis since its 1828 founding. Once a rural landscape defined by cotton and timber, it has evolved into a central suburban pillar of the Jackson metropolitan area, boasting rapid population growth and a diverse economy anchored by manufacturing, healthcare, and professional sports.
Established in 1828 from Hinds County, Rankin County was named for Mississippi Congressman Christopher Rankin. Throughout the 19th century, its identity was firmly rooted in agriculture. By 1860, the county’s population had reached 13,635, with an economy reliant on mixed farming and small-scale industry like lumber and flour mills. During this antebellum period, enslaved people constituted 52 percent of the population, a demographic reality that shifted significantly in the decades following the Civil War.
The 20th century brought a profound economic pivot. By 1960, the workforce had transitioned away from farming, with nearly one-quarter of residents employed in industry and healthcare. This shift coincided with explosive suburban expansion. Between 1960 and 2010, the county’s population surged from 34,322 to 141,617, an increase exceeding 300 percent. Today, the county serves as a critical hub for the Jackson metropolitan area, hosting major infrastructure like the Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport and the West Rankin Industrial Park.
Modern development continues to reshape the region. In 2026, Siemens Energy announced a $300 million investment in a new manufacturing facility, while the recent opening of the West Rankin Parkway aims to leverage interstate and rail access for further growth. The county also maintains a vibrant civic life, evidenced by the repurposing of Trustmark Park—formerly home to the Mississippi Braves—for professional baseball, college showcases, and large-scale community events. With a 2020 population of 157,031, Rankin County remains the fourth-most populous in the state, balancing its rural heritage with its status as a contemporary economic engine.
