How a wild goat survived near-extinction to reclaim the Alps

South Tyrol - In the Kingdom of the Alpine Ibex | Free Documentary Nature · 28:51 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: This documentary follows the Alpine ibex as it navigates the rugged mountains of South Tyrol. It explores a remarkable conservation success story: how a species on the brink of vanishing was brought back from the edge of total extinction.

By the 19th century, the Alpine ibex had been extirpated from most of its historical range in the European Alps. The species faced such a severe population bottleneck that fewer than 100 individuals remained, leaving modern populations with very low genetic diversity.

Today, all living Alpine ibex descend from a small stock preserved in Italy's Gran Paradiso National Park. This successful reintroduction effort has allowed the species to thrive once more, moving its status to 'least concern' on the IUCN Red List.
