Can a robotic spy infiltrate a territorial hippo pod to capture intimate underwater footage?
In short: This footage from the 2017 series Spy in the Wild follows a robotic spy hippo attempting to document the social and territorial behaviors of hippos. It offers a rare, close-up look at these animals in their natural environment, highlighting behaviors that mirror our own human nature.
The series Spy in the Wild, narrated by David Tennant, utilizes innovative technology to observe animal behavior from within their own groups. By capturing startling, intimate moments, the show aims to bridge the gap between the animal kingdom and human lifestyle, suggesting that many animal behaviors are uncannily similar to our own.
Hippos are known for being both highly social and fiercely territorial. The challenge for the spy device is to navigate these complex social dynamics and secure high-quality, close-up footage while avoiding detection or damage from the animals. This exploration is part of a broader effort by BBC Earth to share rare and dramatic natural history content collected over 50 years.
