Why the odorous house ant smells like rotting coconut and thrives in your home.
In short: The odorous house ant is a master of domestic infiltration. Named for the pungent, cheese-like scent it releases when crushed, this resilient insect uses a strategy called dispersed central-place foraging to move its entire colony closer to your kitchen, making it one of the most difficult household pests to eradicate.
Tapinoma sessile, commonly known as the odorous house ant, is a small, eusocial insect native to North America. First described by Thomas Say in 1836, the species earns its name from its unique anatomy: the gaster sits directly atop the petiole, giving it a distinct appearance. When threatened or crushed, these ants emit a strong odor reminiscent of rotting coconut, blue cheese, or turpentine, which serves as a chemical defense mechanism.
The survival strategy of T. sessile is defined by its extreme flexibility. Colonies are polydomous, meaning they occupy multiple nests, and polygynous, housing several reproducing queens. Rather than relying on a single, fixed home, they practice 'dispersed central-place foraging.' If a food source is distant, the entire colony—workers, queens, and brood—will physically relocate to be closer to the resource. This behavior, combined with their ability to survive for over two months without food or water, makes them notoriously difficult to remove once established.
While they are subordinate to more aggressive ant species, T. sessile compensates with superior exploitative abilities. They are highly efficient at finding sugar and protein sources, often tending to aphids and scale insects for honeydew. Recent research has confirmed that these ants exhibit cloning behaviors, allowing them to rapidly expand their numbers under optimal conditions. Because they are attracted to moisture and heat, they frequently invade homes, especially after rain washes away their outdoor food supplies. Effective control requires early intervention, as their population size can grow from a few hundred to tens of thousands if left unchecked.
