In short: The common house spider is a master of adaptation, having hitched a ride on imported cargo from the Mediterranean to colonize homes across the globe. While they are often spotted dashing across your floor or lurking in the bath, these elusive hunters are merely searching for mates or new territory.

The domestic house spider, Tegenaria domestica, is a quintessential indoor resident. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, these spiders were likely introduced to Britain and other parts of the world through imported goods over the last few centuries. They have since expanded their range significantly, thriving in human-made environments like garages, sheds, and cavity walls, which mirror the hollow trees and caves of their ancestral habitat.

These spiders are defined by their unique architecture: a sheet-like web that funnels into a secure retreat. When prey disturbs the silk, the spider senses the vibration and rushes out to secure its meal. While they are generally shy and prefer to remain undisturbed, their presence becomes most noticeable in autumn. During this season, males—distinguishable by palps that resemble boxing gloves—leave their webs to search for females, often finding their way into living spaces through gaps or open windows.

Despite their reputation as unwelcome guests, these spiders are not aggressive and rarely bite; if they do, the bite is unlikely to break human skin. They are remarkably resilient, with females often surviving for more than a year to produce multiple egg sacs. In rare, undisturbed environments like cellars or attics, some females have been reported to live for up to seven years. As they continue to expand their range, they remain a permanent, if often hidden, fixture of the modern home.
