In short: Tracing its origins to the 1833 United States Regiment of Dragoons, this unit served across the American frontier before becoming the 1st Cavalry Regiment in 1861. From the Pawnee Expedition to the Civil War, its history reflects the shifting demands of the nineteenth-century United States Army and its mounted forces.

The 1st Cavalry Regiment traces its lineage to the United States Regiment of Dragoons, authorized by Congress on 2 March 1833. This unit was formed to address a lack of mounted troops on the frontier and followed the disbandment of the Battalion of Mounted Rangers. By June 1834, the regiment had filled its officer complement, which included future Civil War figures like Henry Dodge, Stephen W. Kearny, and Jefferson Davis. Initially headquartered at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, the dragoons were tasked with patrolling the frontier, building infrastructure, and managing relations with Native American tribes.

The regiment's operational history was marked by intense hardship and conflict. During the 1834 Pawnee Expedition, one-fourth of the men and officers succumbed to fever. As the United States expanded, the unit saw action in the Mexican-American War, including General Kearny's 1846 march to California and the Battle of San Pasqual. The regiment also engaged in numerous frontier skirmishes, including the 1850 Bloody Island Massacre at Clear Lake and the 1854 Cieneguilla engagement, where Lieutenant J. W. Davidson's command suffered heavy losses against the Jicarilla Apache.

In 1861, the War Department re-designated mounted regiments to standardize them as cavalry. Because the original dragoons were the oldest mounted unit in active service, they were officially renamed the 1st Regiment of Cavalry on 3 August 1861. A separate unit that had been formed in 1855 under the name 1st Cavalry Regiment was subsequently re-designated the 4th Cavalry Regiment. Following this transition, the 1st Cavalry was transferred to the East, where it served with the Army of the Potomac, participating in major Civil War engagements including the Peninsula Campaign, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign.
