In short: From the thick forests of the Seminole Wars to the vast American West, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment has navigated centuries of conflict. Discover how a single charge in Mexico defined a regiment's spirit and how their insignia preserves the memory of forgotten battles.

Established by President Andrew Jackson on May 23, 1836, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment—originally the Second Regiment of Dragoons—was forged in an era of intense frontier expansion. The unit's early history is marked by aggressive maneuvers, such as their first combat during the Second Seminole War. In 1836, Company D engaged enemy forces at Welika Pond, Florida, while later operations saw the regiment capturing the important chief King Philip in 1837. Their identity was further solidified during the Mexican-American War, specifically at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma on May 9, 1846. There, Captain Charles A. May’s squadron successfully neutralized a Mexican artillery battery, an achievement that remains a central part of their heraldry.

The regiment's insignia serves as a visual archive of these historical milestones. An eight-pointed gold star represents the original dragoon designation, while a green palmetto leaf commemorates their early service against the Seminole Indians in Florida. The fleur-de-lis honors their combat roles in both World War I and World War II. Even their motto, "Toujours Prêt" (Always Ready), stems from the 1846 charge, echoing Captain May's command to remember the regiment and follow their officers.

Throughout the 19th century, the unit's presence was felt across the American landscape. They participated in the Utah War in 1858 and played a role in the establishment of Fort Worth in 1849. During the American Civil War, the regiment earned five Medals of Honor and 14 battle streamers through intense engagements in the Eastern theater, including the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Antietam. Despite the heavy costs of frontier warfare, such as the 1866 massacre of Fetterman's expedition, the regiment's legacy of service continues through its modern iteration as a Stryker cavalry unit based in Germany.
