In short: The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, known as the Blackhorse, has evolved from a 1901 cavalry unit into a modern force. Once patrolling the Iron Curtain in West Germany, the regiment later pioneered armored tactics in Vietnam, eventually becoming the U.S. Army's primary opposing force for training at Fort Irwin.

Constituted in 1901, the 11th Cavalry Regiment initially served in the Philippine–American War and the 1916 Pancho Villa Expedition. By the mid-20th century, the unit underwent significant reorganization. During the Cold War, the regiment was deployed to West Germany in 1957 to conduct border surveillance along the Iron Curtain, specifically monitoring the German-Czech frontier. This mission lasted until 1964, when the unit returned to the United States before its eventual deployment to Vietnam.

In Vietnam, the regiment adapted its equipment to the unique demands of counterinsurgency. Soldiers coined the term ACAV for the M113 Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle, which featured added gun shields and machine guns. While the regiment tested the new M551 Sheridan tank in 1969, they famously retained their M48A3 Patton tanks for "thunder runs"—clearing highways by firing all weapons while moving. These tactics were essential during major operations like Cedar Falls, Junction City, and the response to the 1968 Tet Offensive.

The regiment's identity is deeply tied to its leadership and base operations. Commanded by Colonel George S. Patton IV from 1968 to 1969, the unit established the Blackhorse Base Camp near Xuan Loc in 1966. Today, the 11th ACR serves a different purpose: stationed at the Fort Irwin National Training Center in California, it acts as the opposing force (OPFOR) for U.S. and foreign military units, simulating modern urban and asymmetrical combat scenarios.
