Uttarakhand breaks electoral history as the incumbent government secures a second consecutive term
In short: In a landmark 2022 election, Uttarakhand witnessed its first re-election of an incumbent government since the state's inception. Despite significant internal leadership turnover and a competitive field, the Bharatiya Janata Party maintained control of the 70-seat assembly, setting a new precedent for political stability in the region.
The 2022 Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly election, held on 14 February, marked a pivotal moment in the state's political history. For the first time since the state was created, voters returned the incumbent government to power. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 47 seats, maintaining a clear majority despite a loss of 10 seats compared to the previous assembly. The Indian National Congress (INC) finished with 19 seats, establishing itself as the official opposition.
The path to this victory was marked by significant internal volatility. The state saw three different Chief Ministers within a single year. Trivendra Singh Rawat resigned in March 2021 due to internal party pressure, followed by the brief tenure of Tirath Singh Rawat. By July 2021, Pushkar Singh Dhami assumed the role of the 10th Chief Minister to navigate the state through constitutional challenges. This leadership transition occurred against the backdrop of an active campaign season, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entering the fray with a 10-point manifesto focused on infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Both major parties utilized detailed manifestos to court voters. The BJP’s 'drishti patra' emphasized infrastructure projects like the Char Dham all-weather road, social welfare schemes including increased pensions for senior citizens, and support for ex-servicemen. The party also pledged stricter legislation regarding 'love jihad' and measures to address demographic concerns. Meanwhile, the INC launched its 'Uttarakhand Swabhiman Pratigya Patra' campaign. The election results, declared on 10 March 2022, solidified the BJP's mandate, concluding a period of intense political maneuvering and setting the stage for the state's governance through the end of the assembly's term.
