In short: In a landslide victory, the Social Democratic Party secured an absolute majority in the Saarland Landtag, ending years of coalition governance. This result, driven by the personal popularity of Anke Rehlinger, stands as a rare instance of an incumbent Minister-President losing their position in a state election.

The election held on 27 March 2022 saw the Social Democratic Party (SPD) capture 43.5% of the vote, a significant increase that granted them an absolute majority in the 51-seat Landtag. This outcome was a sharp reversal from the 2017 election, where the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) had emerged as the largest party with 40.7% of the vote. By 2022, the CDU's support had fallen to 28.5%, leading to the defeat of incumbent Minister-President Tobias Hans. This marked the first time the SPD had achieved an absolute majority in the state since 1994.

Internal instability plagued several parties leading up to the vote. The Left party suffered from a long-standing factional dispute involving figures like Oskar Lafontaine and Thomas Lutze, which ultimately contributed to the party losing all its seats. Meanwhile, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) faced significant procedural hurdles when its state list was withdrawn due to internal conflicts, leaving the party without a lead candidate. The electoral threshold of 5% also played a decisive role, as 22.3% of all votes cast did not result in parliamentary representation—a record high for any German state election. Notably, The Greens missed the threshold by a mere 23 votes.

The result was widely viewed as a bellwether for the broader German political landscape, testing the strength of the federal coalition led by Olaf Scholz and the leadership of the CDU's Friedrich Merz. Following the victory, Anke Rehlinger was chosen by the Landtag to serve as Minister-President on 25 April 2022, securing 32 of the 51 votes. Her success allowed the SPD to govern independently, moving away from the grand coalition model that had defined Saarland politics since 2012.
