A historic drought ends as the Texas Rangers claim their first title
In short: The 2023 World Series featured a rare matchup of two wild card teams. It was a contest of extremes: one team had never won a title, while the other had never lost a championship appearance. Ultimately, the Rangers overcame a 62-season drought to secure their first victory.
The 2023 championship series was the 119th edition of Major League Baseball's premier event. It pitted the Arizona Diamondbacks, a team that had never lost a World Series appearance, against the Texas Rangers, a franchise that had never won one. This unique dynamic was underscored by the teams' recent histories; both squads had suffered seasons with over 100 losses in 2021. The series, which ran from October 27 to November 1, saw Texas emerge victorious in five games.
This win held immense importance for the Texas Rangers, representing their inaugural World Series trophy since being established in 1961 and moving to the DFW metroplex in 1971. Before this triumph, the Rangers held the second-longest active championship drought in MLB, trailing only the Cleveland Guardians. The series was also notable for its statistical rarity; the combined 174 wins between the two teams was the lowest total ever recorded for a non-shortened season.
The postseason journey for both teams was marked by high-stakes drama. The Rangers, who entered as favorites, had to overcome a mid-season period (2017–2022) without a winning record. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks navigated extreme fluctuations, including a 32-game stretch from early July to mid-August where they went 7–25. The series concluded in extra innings, with Adolis García hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th to secure the championship for Texas.
