Sweden saw the highest number of competing parties in any EU nation
In short: During the 2024 European Parliament elections, Sweden's political landscape proved exceptionally fragmented. With 102 different parties and lists vying for influence, the country hosted more candidates than any other member state in the European Union, reflecting a highly diverse and competitive electoral environment.
The 2024 European Parliament election in Sweden, held on 9 June 2024, marked a significant moment in the nation's democratic history. This was the seventh such election held in Sweden and notably the first to occur following the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Due to the redistribution of seats following Brexit, Sweden was entitled to one additional Member of the European Parliament (MEP) compared to the previous election cycle. This specific electoral event represented the seventh time the nation has participated in these continental polls. It also marked the inaugural instance of such a vote occurring after the United Kingdom's exit from the bloc.
The mechanics of the Swedish vote are complex, involving a single nationwide constituency. Voters elect 21 members using a semi-open list proportional representation system. To ensure stability, seats are allocated through a modified Sainte-Laguë system, and parties must meet a 4% electoral threshold to gain representation. This system, combined with the sheer variety of political options, contributed to the record-breaking participation of 102 parties and lists, the highest count in any EU country.
Voting eligibility is extended to both Swedish and EU citizens residing within the country, provided they have turned 18 by election day. While Swedish citizens do not require registration, other EU residents must register in their county of residence at least 30 days before the vote. To assist voters in navigating this crowded field, SVT provided an 'election compass' featuring 30 different statements to help citizens match their convictions to specific candidates and parties.
