Icelandic voters just handed the 'Valkyries' the keys to the Althing
In short: In a historic shift, the 2024 Icelandic parliamentary election saw the collapse of a long-standing government and the rise of a new all-female coalition. It marks a definitive break from the post-2008 political status quo, as voters traded established power for a new, ideologically diverse governing bloc.
The election on November 30, 2024, was triggered by the collapse of the government led by Bjarni Benediktsson. The administration fell due to internal disputes regarding foreign policy, asylum seekers, and energy. Following the Althingi's breakup, Kristrún Frostadóttir's Social Democratic Alliance secured a 15-seat plurality, beating the governing Independence Party. The results were historic for several parties. The Independence Party, Progressive Party, Left-Green Movement, and Pirate Party all suffered their worst performances in their respective histories. In contrast, record-breaking highs were achieved by the Centre Party, the People's Party, and Viðreisn.
For the initial time since 1999 and 2013, the Pirate Party and Left-Green Movement were completely excluded from parliament. The political landscape is now dominated by a new coalition of three parties: the Social Democratic Alliance, Viðreisn, and the People's Party. This group, nicknamed the 'Valkyries' because all three leaders are women, secured 36 of the 63 seats in the Althing. This formation follows a broader trend of Icelandic voters consistently voting against every post-2008 recession government except for the 2021 election. The new government was officially formed on December 21, 2024, with Kristrún Frostadóttir appointed as Prime Minister.
The electoral mechanics are unique; Iceland uses open list proportional representation across six constituencies. While 54 seats are allocated locally using the D'Hondt method, 9 leveling seats are assigned nationally to ensure proportionality, requiring a 5 percent national vote threshold. A significant constitutional quirk also dictates seat distribution: because the number of voters per representative in the Southwest constituency has more than doubled the Northwest constituency, a seat was transferred from the Northwest to the Southwest before this election.
