BMW breaks a decade of silence to claim its first title
In short: In the high-stakes world of Superbike racing, dominance often belongs to the established. Yet, 2024 saw a seismic shift as BMW finally broke through a long-standing barrier, securing its first rider's title since entering the world-level superbikes scene in 2011.
The 2024 Superbike World Championship season marked a significant turning point for manufacturer dynamics. While Ducati secured its 20th manufacturer's title, the story of the year was the ascent of Toprak Razgatlıoğlu. Having previously won the championship in 2021, Razgatlıoğlu secured his second world title in 2024. This victory was particularly historic for BMW, as it represented the first time a rider on the brand's machinery won a world-level superbike title since the company first entered the category in 2011.
The season also served as a massive reshuffling of the grid's hierarchy. It saw the promotion of several riders from the Supersport World Championship to the Superbike class, including Nicolò Bulega, who finished as the runner-up in his rookie Superbike year. Other notable transitions included Jonathan Rea moving to the Pata Yamaha factory team after a nine-year tenure with Kawasaki Racing Team, and Andrea Iannone returning to the grid after serving a four-year ban.
Logistically, the 2024 calendar was subject to mid-season adjustments. Originally announced in October 2023, the schedule saw the cancellation of the Hungarian round at Balaton Park Circuit due to ongoing construction. This round was replaced by a session at the Circuito do Estoril. Beyond the primary competition, the 2024 season also hosted the inaugural FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship as a support class at various European tracks, expanding the championship's reach.
