A three-point margin decides the fate of an entire season
In short: In a sport where milliseconds determine victory, the 2024 World Rally Championship concluded with a razor-thin finish. After thirteen rounds across four continents, the battle for manufacturer supremacy came down to a mere three points—the narrowest gap in the series since 1983.
The 2024 season was defined by a major overhaul of the scoring system designed to discourage teams from 'saving' their tires for the final Power Stage. Under these new rules, points are distributed across the top ten competitors at the end of Saturday, with rewards decreasing as the rank drops. On Sunday, the top seven runners of individual stages earn additional points. This structure ensures that every stage remains a high-stakes competition rather than a sprint to the finish. The new rules also grant bonus points for the top five finishers in each Power Stage. This system applies to all three championship categories simultaneously.
The manufacturer's title was a grueling marathon between Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT and Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT. Throughout the year, the lead swung back and forth: Hyundai built a 35-point advantage at the Acropolis Rally, only for Toyota to strike back in Chile and halve that gap. The season finale in Japan saw both teams level on 553 points before the final Power Stage. Ultimately, Toyota secured their fourth consecutive title by finishing first and second in that final sprint. Toyota's defending champions were joined by M-Sport Ford WRT in third place. Thirteen events took place throughout Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe.
A significant change occurred within the power dynamics of the solo title. Thierry Neuville and Martijn Wydaeghe claimed their first titles at Rally Japan after Ott Tänak and Martin Järveoja crashed out while leading the event. The season was also marked by significant logistical shifts, including the relocation of the Monte Carlo Rally headquarters to Gap, France, and the debut of Rally Latvia as a replacement for Estonia. The season began with the Monte Carlo Rally in January and ended in November. This year saw the Kenyan Rally move to an Easter weekend slot in March.
