A global snapshot of the 2025 electoral calendar across sovereign states and territories
In short: In 2025, nations across the globe held a diverse array of national and federal elections. From presidential contests to legislative votes and constitutional referendums, these events shaped governance in sovereign states and dependent territories alike. This calendar excludes by-elections, focusing instead on the major democratic processes that defined the year.
The 2025 electoral landscape was marked by a wide variety of political mechanisms, ranging from direct presidential elections to legislative renewals. Early in the year, voters in the Turks and Caicos Islands headed to the polls on 7 February, followed shortly by presidential voting in Abkhazia on 15 February. Throughout the spring, countries such as Tajikistan, Belize, and the Marshall Islands participated in various forms of constitutional and parliamentary decision-making, reflecting the distinct administrative needs of each region.
As the year progressed, the complexity of these elections became more apparent. Some nations, such as the Philippines and Australia, held comprehensive legislative elections in May. By autumn, the schedule intensified with significant events including constitutional referendums in Guinea and multi-round presidential contests in Seychelles and Chile. These processes often involved complex logistics, such as the two-round presidential system in Chile, which concluded with its second round on 14 December, and the multi-stage parliamentary elections in Egypt held throughout November.
Beyond direct elections, the year also featured several indirect processes for selecting heads of state or members of upper houses. These were conducted through electoral colleges or votes within existing legislative bodies. For instance, India held elections for its Council of States in June and October, while the Isle of Man held a legislative council election in March. These indirect methods, alongside the more common direct ballots, highlight the diverse ways in which sovereign states and territories managed their political transitions and institutional continuity throughout the 2025 calendar year.
