A historic double-digit landslide for Democrats in 2025 state races
In short: Despite predictions of razor-thin margins in swing states, the 2025 gubernatorial elections saw a decisive shift. In New Jersey and Virginia, Democratic candidates didn't just win; they secured double-digit victories, marking a rare statistical anomaly in modern American state politics.
The 2025 elections in New Jersey and Virginia were shaped by constitutional term limits. Both states saw incumbents—Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey and Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia—forced to step down after serving their terms, which were last won in 2021. This created a vacuum for new leadership in two moderately blue states that had previously shown signs of shifting toward the Republican party in the 2024 presidential cycle.
Political analysts had anticipated a much closer contest. New Jersey, in particular, had shown a significant swing to the right in 2024, where Donald Trump won by only 6%. However, the reality on November 4, 2025, defied these expectations. Democratic nominee Mikie Sherrill won New Jersey by approximately 14 points, outperforming the Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli. In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger secured a victory by over 15 points, becoming the first woman to hold the governor's office in the state's history.
The scale of these victories was historically significant. It marked the first time since 1985 that every race in a single cycle of governorships was decided by double digits. While the 2024 presidential results suggested a competitive environment, the 2025 gubernatorial results demonstrated a different momentum, with both Sherrill and Spanberger significantly outperforming the margins seen in previous cycles.
These outcomes also broke long-standing party streaks. Sherrill became the second female governor of New Jersey and won three consecutive terms for her party—a feat not achieved since 1961. Meanwhile, the results in Virginia signaled a major shift in the state's executive leadership, moving from a Republican-held seat to a Democratic one with a margin that exceeded most pre-election modeling.
