How a 0.7% win probability became the greatest comeback in NFL history
In short: In the final six minutes of a game, the Denver Broncos faced a deficit so steep that their win probability plummeted to just 0.7%. What followed was a 33-point fourth-quarter explosion that shattered a 1,602-game league record and rewrote the record books.
The 2025 Denver Broncos season was defined by statistical anomalies and unprecedented resilience. During a matchup against the Giants, the team trailed 26–8 with only 6:38 remaining in regulation. According to Next Gen Stats, the Broncos' chance of victory had dwindled to a nearly impossible 0.7%. However, the fourth quarter saw a monumental scoring surge, as Denver amassed 33 points in a single period. No team in NFL history has ever scored more points in the final quarter after being held scoreless during the game's first three periods.
The mechanics of the comeback were driven by quarterback Bo Nix, who achieved a feat never before seen in the league: running for two touchdowns and throwing for two more all within the final quarter. This offensive onslaught was complemented by a defense that stifled the opposition, contributing to a season that saw the Broncos tie a franchise record for single-season wins, a mark last achieved in 1998. The team's success was built on a foundation of defensive dominance, including a game against the Jets where they allowed a mere −10 net passing yards, the fewest in franchise history.
Despite the highs, the season was marked by significant volatility. The team's momentum was halted in the Divisional Round when Nix suffered a season-ending ankle injury on the penultimate play of a victory over the Green Bay Packers. Without their starting quarterback, the Broncos fell 10–7 to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. This loss ended a decade-long drought of advancing past the first round of the playoffs, even as the team secured the AFC's No. 1 seed through tiebreakers.
