Vietnam's top-flight football enters a new era of regulation and rules
In short: The 2026–27 V.League 1 season marks a significant shift for Vietnamese football. Beyond the competition for the national championship, the league is implementing strict new time-management rules and expanded video technology, all while navigating a landscape of shifting team identities and complex player eligibility requirements.
The 2026–27 season, also known as the LPBank V.League 1, represents the 44th season of Vietnam's highest football division and its 27th as a professional league. The campaign began on 4 September 2026 and is scheduled to run until 22 May 2027. A mid-season hiatus is planned from 25 December 2026 to 12 February 2027 to allow the national team to compete in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The league has introduced rigorous new time-management protocols. Players must exit the field within ten seconds of being substituted; failing to do so results in a one-minute delay for the incoming substitute. Additionally, referees will use a visual 5-second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks to combat time-wasting. If a team fails to restart play in time, the opposition receives a restart, or a corner kick if the infraction involved a goal kick.
Structural changes have also altered the league's composition. The 14-team field includes twelve returning clubs and two promoted sides, Truong Tuoi Dong Nai and Bac Ninh, both of whom are making their top-tier debuts. Conversely, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City and PVF-CAND have been relegated. Notably, the relegation system has shifted to include two direct relegation spots, removing the relegation play-off game that existed in the 2025–26 season.
Technology and eligibility also see updates. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system has expanded its scope to include reviewing wrongly awarded corner kicks and specific attacking fouls. Regarding player rosters, clubs may register four foreign players, though those in intercontinental or sub-continental competitions can register up to seven, with a limit of four players per match. Teams also have the option to register up to two foreign players of Vietnamese heritage.
