A new era for Thai football begins with a major rule shift
In short: The 2026–27 Thai League 1 season marks a significant milestone for professional football in Thailand. As the 30th season of the top flight, it introduces pivotal changes to player quotas and welcomes three historic newcomers to the highest tier of competition.
The upcoming 2026–27 season represents a dual milestone for Thai football. It will be the 30th season of the country's professional top-flight league since its founding in 1996, and the 10th season operating under the current 'Thai League 1' branding. Currently known as the BYD Sealion 6 League I due to a sponsorship deal with BYD Auto, the campaign is scheduled to run from 4 September 2026 to 30 May 2027.
A major regulatory shift defines this season: the ASEAN Quota has been abolished. While teams can still register a maximum of ten foreign players, they are restricted to having only seven foreign players in the matchday line-up at any single time. This structural change comes as the league prepares to host 16 teams, consisting of thirteen returning sides and three newly promoted clubs.
The promotion race has concluded with a historic influx of talent. Rasisalai United and Sisaket United secured their first-ever promotions to the top tier, with Rasisalai winning their spot on 18 April 2026 and Sisaket on 25 April 2026. The final spot was claimed by Pattani, who defeated Nongbua Pitchaya in a penalty shootout following a 3–3 aggregate draw in the promotion play-offs. Consequently, all three promoted teams are making their debut in the top flight.
The league enters this season with Buriram United as the dominant force to beat. They enter the campaign as five-time defending champions, having secured five consecutive league titles and their 12th overall top-flight championship in the previous season.
