In short: On June 24, 2026, two massive earthquakes struck northwestern Venezuela just seconds apart. This rare phenomenon, known as an earthquake doublet, released immense energy along the Boconó fault system, causing devastating destruction across the northern coastline and the capital city of Caracas.

The twin events occurred at 6:04 PM and 6:05 PM local time, with moment magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The first earthquake, located near Yumare in the Veroes Municipality, acted as a foreshock. It was followed only 39 seconds later by a 7.5 magnitude mainshock centered in the Caribbean Sea, northwest of Caracas. Seismologists suggest the first event likely activated the second by increasing stress along a second fault located closer to the surface. The first tremor reached a depth of 12.6 miles, whereas the subsequent mainshock was significantly shallower at only 6.2 miles. These seismic waves were felt throughout much of the nation, including the state of Aragua and Carabobo.

These tremors occurred within the Boconó fault system, a complex network of faults running southwest to northeast. Where it meets the east-west San Sebastián fault system, this structure creates a strike-slip boundary separating the South American and Caribbean tectonic plates. This boundary accommodates dextral motion at a rate of approximately 10 mm per year. The 2026 events were the strongest to hit the region since the 1900 San Narciso earthquake. This tectonic movement occurs along a transpressional boundary zone. The specific faulting involved was identified as shallow strike-slip movement.

The human and structural toll was immense. In La Guaira state, an estimated 80% of buildings collapsed. While initial reports from Venezuelan officials cited over 3,800 deaths and 16,700 injuries, updated figures from August 2026 indicated at least 6,500 fatalities and approximately 226,700 injuries or hospitalizations. The catastrophe's suddenness led interim president Delcy Rodríguez to announce a state of emergency. Search and rescue teams were immediately deployed to manage the crisis. Beyond the casualties, the disasters caused significant interruptions to telecommunications and power supplies.
