In short: In 2027, the global basketball stage shifts to the Middle East for the twentieth edition of the FIBA World Cup. This tournament marks a historic milestone as the first time the competition will be held in the Arab world, following a unanimous selection of Qatar by the FIBA Central Board.

The upcoming championship, scheduled from 27 August to 12 September 2027, represents the third consecutive time the event has been hosted in Asia. Following tournaments in China and the multi-nation effort across the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, Qatar secured hosting rights through a unanimous vote during an April 2023 meeting in Metro Manila. As the host nation, Qatar receives an automatic entry into the tournament.

A defining feature of the 2027 event is the extreme proximity of its venues. Unlike previous tournaments that spanned vast distances, all four proposed locations are situated within a single city and are separated by no more than 30 minutes of travel. These venues include the Lusail Arena, Al Attiyah Arena, and Duhail Arena—all originally constructed for the 2015 World Men's Handball Championship—alongside the Al Janoub Stadium, which will undergo a temporary conversion from its usual football configuration to accommodate basketball matches.

The tournament will feature 32 teams competing across three distinct phases: a group stage, a second round, and a final knockout phase. Beyond the title, the competition serves as a critical pathway to the 2028 Summer Olympics. Specific qualification slots are allocated to the top performers from Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and the Americas, who will join the host nation, the United States, in the Olympic field. Germany enters the 2027 cycle as the defending champion after their victory over Serbia in the 2023 final.

The qualification process for the 2027 World Cup is rigorous, involving 80 teams across four FIBA zones. Participants must navigate through continental competitions like AfroBasket and the FIBA Asia Cup to reach the qualifiers. The structure relies on home-and-away round-robin play, with no wild card entries permitted. This ensures that every team competing in Qatar has earned their place through sustained performance in their respective regional brackets.
