The World Rally Championship is returning to the United States for the first time since 1988

The 2027 season marks the 55th running of the FIA World Rally Championship. While the series remains a global endeavor, the 2027 calendar is defined by significant geographical shifts. Most notably, the championship will return to the United States for the inauguration of the Rally US. This gravel event is expected to be based in Knoxville, Tennessee, marking the first time the series has visited the country since 1988.
The calendar also sees a major return to the United Kingdom with the debut of Rally Scotland in Aberdeen. This follows an eight-year absence from the UK, which last hosted a WRC event in 2019. Simultaneously, the series is undergoing a restructuring of its traditional fixtures: Rally Italia Sardegna will be replaced by the Rally di Roma Capitale, a new tarmac event headquartered in Rome. Other notable changes include the removal of Rally de Portugal due to scheduling conflicts and the return of Rally Saudi Arabia, which was omitted in 2026 due to the war in Iran.
Technically, the 2027 season introduces the 'WRC27' regulations, replacing the Rally1 rules used from 2022 to 2026. Rally1 vehicles must now incorporate Rally2-specification brakes, running gear, suspension, and engines under these latest mandates. Manufacturers like Toyota—which is rebranding its racing division to Gazoo Racing—are preparing new cars under these specs. Spanning four continents, the fifteen-round season finishes in November at Rally Saudi Arabia to decide the title.
