In short: Headquartered in Birmingham, the 20th Special Forces Group oversees a vast area of responsibility. From the Caribbean to the southwestern Atlantic, this National Guard unit executes complex missions ranging from counter-terrorism to unconventional warfare, often deploying to some of the world's most volatile regions for decades at a time.

As one of two Army National Guard groups dedicated to U.S. Army Special Forces, the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) maintains a massive geographic footprint. Its area of responsibility, within the United States Southern Command, encompasses 32 nations, including the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, and Latin America south of Mexico. This responsibility is shared with the active-duty 7th Special Forces Group, which is based at Eglin Air Force Base.

The unit's operational history is marked by long-term engagements and significant deployments. During the early stages of Operation Enduring Freedom, the 20th Group's 1st Battalion was stationed at Karshi-Khanabad Air Base in Uzbekistan, while the 2nd Battalion eventually deployed to Afghanistan in 2003. The unit's involvement in Afghanistan lasted for nearly twenty years, with various battalions and companies rotating through the country. In Iraq, the group's presence was also extensive; while individual members served in the early stages of the 2003–2004 conflict, almost all of the unit's battalions and companies rotated through the country between 2006 and 2011.

Beyond combat and reconnaissance, the 20th Group is tasked with nine distinct doctrinal missions. Its nine doctrinal missions comprise security force assistance, counter-terrorism, special reconnaissance, counter-insurgency, direct action, foreign internal defense, unconventional warfare, information operations, and counterproliferation of weapons of mass destruction. While the unit has faced scrutiny—such as a 2024 investigation into a social media post featuring a controversial Nazi-themed patch—it remains a vital component of the U.S. military's specialized capabilities.
