In short: Kamal Nath has been a fixture in Indian politics for over four decades, serving as a cabinet minister and Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. From his early ties to the Nehru-Gandhi family to his complex legacy involving economic liberalization and political scandal, his career offers a window into India's evolving governance.

Born in 1946 to a merchant family, Kamal Nath attended The Doon School and later graduated from St. Xavier's College in Kolkata. His political ascent began in 1980 with his first election to the Lok Sabha. Over the following years, he became a senior figure within the Indian National Congress, holding various ministerial portfolios including Environment, Textiles, Commerce and Industry, and Urban Development. His tenure as Minister of Commerce and Industry was particularly notable for the implementation of the 2004-2009 Foreign Trade Policy, which introduced schemes designed to incentivize exports and expand India's global trade footprint.

Nath's career has been marked by significant economic advocacy and controversy. He has been a vocal proponent of infrastructure projects like the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor, a massive development initiative aiming to stimulate industrial growth across six states. However, his time in office has also faced scrutiny. In 1996, he was charge-sheeted in the Hawala scandal, and in 2019, the Income Tax Department inspected properties linked to his aides, alleging the discovery of unaccounted cash. Additionally, he faced long-standing allegations regarding his presence during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, though the Nanavati Commission later found insufficient evidence to indict him.

His political journey reached a peak when he became the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh in December 2018. His administration was short-lived, ending in March 2020 following a political crisis triggered by the resignation of several MLAs. Beyond politics, Nath has been recognized for his contributions to the public sector, receiving an honorary doctorate in 2006 and being named FDI Personality of the Year in 2007. Despite his accolades, his career remains a subject of intense debate, highlighted by his 2020 censure by the Election Commission of India for violating the Model Code of Conduct during by-election campaigning.
