In short: Located in Chennai, Anna University is a major public state institution with a turbulent administrative history. Established in 1978, it has undergone repeated structural shifts, splitting into six constituent universities in 2007 before re-merging into a single entity by 2012. It remains a central pillar of Tamil Nadu's engineering education.

Named after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. N. Annadurai, Anna University was founded on 4 September 1978. Its core consists of four prestigious institutions: the College of Engineering, Guindy; the Alagappa College of Technology; the Madras Institute of Technology; and the School of Architecture and Planning. While the main campus is situated in Guindy, Chennai, the university maintains a vast network of satellite campuses and affiliated engineering colleges across regions including Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, and Tirunelveli.

The university's administrative structure has been highly fluid. Under the 2001 Amendment Act, it became an affiliating university, overseeing hundreds of government and self-financed colleges. By 2007, a government decision fractured the institution into six separate universities. This fragmentation was short-lived; a 2011 bill initiated a re-merger, which was finalized in August 2012. Today, the previously independent regional universities function as regional campuses under the primary university umbrella, which continues to manage engineering and technology courses through a dual-semester examination system.

Beyond its administrative evolution, the university serves as a hub for specialized research and academic development. The School of Architecture and Planning, for instance, hosts the Centre for Human Settlements, which provides consultancy and training in urban management. The university has produced a diverse array of notable alumni, ranging from Turing Award winner Raj Reddy and cognitive scientist Rangaswamy Narasimhan to prominent figures in industry, sports, and law, such as Venu Srinivasan and Krishnamachari Srikkanth. Despite its academic stature, the institution faces modern challenges, including recent security concerns following a criminal incident on campus in December 2024.
