From Mughal governor’s outpost to a modern industrial hub, the story of Bareilly.
In short: Bareilly, a major metropolis in Western Uttar Pradesh, sits on the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Founded in 1537, it evolved from a local chieftain’s settlement into a significant Mughal administrative centre. Today, it is a key commercial node, renowned for its furniture, textiles, and its role as a birthplace of Islamic movements.
The city’s origins trace back to 1537, when Jagat Singh Katehriya established a settlement named 'Bans-Bareli' after his sons. By 1657, the Mughal governor Mukrand Rai laid the foundation for the modern city, which subsequently served as a vital administrative seat. The region’s strategic importance grew as it became the heart of the Kingdom of Rohilkhand, a power that famously blocked Maratha expansion at the 1761 Third Battle of Panipat. Following the First Rohilla War in 1774, the city passed to the Nawab of Oudh and was eventually ceded to the British East India Company in 1801.
Bareilly’s cultural and religious identity is deeply layered. It is known as 'Nath Nagri' for its ancient Shiva temples and serves as the origin point for the Barelvi movement, a Sunni Islamic school founded by Ahmad Raza Khan. Archaeological evidence from the district, particularly the ancient site of Ahichchhatra, reveals a rich history dating back to the 2nd millennium BC. Excavations here in the 1940s were pivotal in identifying painted grey ware, providing a model for understanding the cultural sequence of the Ganges Valley.
Economically, the city has transformed significantly. In the early 19th century, it was a flourishing cotton centre with approximately 20,000 looms. The 20th century brought industrial diversification, with the establishment of match factories, sugar plants, and breweries. Since India’s economic liberalisation, Bareilly has continued to expand, balancing its traditional agrarian roots and handicraft sectors with modern infrastructure. As one of India’s 100 Smart Cities, it remains a critical transit and commercial hub, equidistant from Delhi and Lucknow.
