In short: Bernd Schuster was a midfielder so gifted that coaches called him the successor to Franz Beckenbauer. Yet, a devastating knee injury forced him to reinvent his game, transforming him from a dynamic box-to-box attacker into a deep-lying maestro of vision and technique.

Schuster's professional journey began in 1978 with 1. FC Köln, where his early potential was so high that coach Hennes Weisweiler considered him the best player he ever trained. After moving to FC Barcelona in 1980, he became a cornerstone of their midfield. However, his career hit a major turning point in 1981 at age 21, when a severe knee injury inflicted by an aggressive tackle from Athletic Bilbao's Andoni Goikoetxea robbed him of his natural pace.

Rather than fading away, Schuster adapted. His coaches moved him into a deep-lying playmaker role, where he used his elite vision and technique to dictate the tempo of the game. This transition allowed him to excel at both short and long passing, earning him a reputation as one of the best midfielders of his generation. During 1980, he secured the European Silver Ball, while the Bronze Ball was awarded to him in 1981 and 1985; additionally, he earned the title of La Liga's top foreign player in 1985 and 1991.

His legacy is defined by a complex relationship with authority. He was known for an outspoken nature that led to friction with managers like Udo Lattek and Jupp Derwall, and even caused a sporting scandal when he skipped a match against Albania to be home for his son's birth. As a manager, he became known for a 'reckless' attacking style, notably leading Real Madrid to a league title in 2007–08, where he achieved a record 85 points, before his tenure was marked by frequent, often sarcastic, confrontations with the media.
