How a textile powerhouse transformed into the logistics heart of the Mumbai region
In short: Once defined by its dense concentration of power looms, Bhiwandi has evolved into a critical nexus for India’s modern economy. While its textile legacy persists, the city now serves as one of Asia’s largest warehousing hubs, anchoring the supply chains for major e-commerce giants and the broader Mumbai metropolitan area.
Located 20 kilometres northeast of Mumbai in the Thane district, Bhiwandi occupies a strategic position within the Konkani coastal lowland. Historically, the city established itself as a premier industrial hub, boasting the highest number of power looms and handlooms in India. For years, the majority of its population relied on this textile sector, which remains the second-largest cluster of its kind in the country, trailing only Surat in Gujarat.
However, the local economy has faced significant turbulence since 2012. The textile industry has grappled with an economic downturn, exacerbated by the introduction of new goods and services taxes and a persistent reliance on middlemen who capture significant margins. In response to these shifts, Bhiwandi has aggressively pivoted toward logistics and warehousing. Its proximity to the Nhava Seva port and its integration into the Mumbai–Agra Highway have made it an indispensable node for companies such as Amazon, Flipkart, and FedEx, which now maintain major branches within the city.
The city's infrastructure reflects this transition toward a broader industrial and service-oriented landscape. Beyond its massive warehousing capacity, Bhiwandi hosts one of Asia’s largest water treatment plants at Panjrapur, with a capacity of 455 MLD. Future development is also underway, with the Mumbai Metro line 5 project slated for completion in 2025. Financially, the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation reported a balanced budget for the 2022–23 fiscal year, with total revenue receipts and expenditures both reaching approximately ₹508–509 crore. As the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continues to expand, Bhiwandi stands as a testament to the adaptability of industrial cities in the face of global economic change.
