In short: He owned 44 Rolls-Royces, a massive medal collection, and a legendary necklace. But Bhupinder Singh of Patiala was more than just an extravagant ruler; he was a master of political maneuvering and a pioneer of Indian sports.

Sir Bhupender Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala from 1900 to 1938, lived a life defined by immense scale and influence. A member of the Phulkian dynasty, his reign was marked by significant architectural legacies, including the Shri Kali Devi Temple and the Chail View Palace. His interests spanned from the boardroom, having founded the State Bank of Patiala in 1917, to the cricket pitch, where he captained the Indian team during its first Test tour of England in 1932. His architectural footprint extended to Shimla, where he commissioned the Cedar Lodge and Oak Over. He also established a unique monorail system within his territory.

His political acumen was as notable as his wealth. From 1926 to 1938, Singh advocated for princely state interests while leading the Chamber of Princes. In a high-stakes election for the chancellorship, he faced a challenge from his cousin, Udai Bhan Singh of Dholpur. Despite the British Raj's political departments supporting his opponent, Singh secured victory through a sophisticated campaign. He utilized his vast wealth to secure votes and even deployed his private plane to transport his canvassing committee across various states to court other rulers. During the First World War, he served as an honorary lieutenant-colonel in several regions, including France and Palestine. His military service earned him 43 different medals.

Singh also influenced international sports, heading the Indian Olympic Association (1928–1938) and helping establish the BCCI. However, his personal life was equally extraordinary, characterized by a massive household that included ten wives and a harem of 350 concubines, fathering 88 children, 52 of whom reached adulthood. His legendary jewelry included a Cartier order worth ₹1,000 million. Beyond his vast family, he was a dedicated patron of the arts and a member of the Freemasons.
